Hialeah, FL - Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Florida endorsed former Hialeah Mayor Raul Martinez, candidate for Florida's 21st Congressional District, at a Labor Day event today followed by a Walk for Change throughout the District.

"Our members are determined to elect candidates who will fight for good jobs in South Florida in order to defy the trend where more and more workers are living in poverty and without healthcare," said Monica Russo, SEIU Florida's President. "That's why SEIU Florida members are partnering with Raul Martinez to chart a new course for South Florida's working families."

Mayor Martinez and SEIU Florida spoke about the endorsement and made several important policy announcements, including the campaign to pass the Employee Free Choice Act, which will provide workers a fair process by which to form unions. Following the endorsement, Mayor Martinez joined SEIU Florida nurses, healthcare workers and janitors in a Walk for Change.

"Secure jobs, better wages and healthcare are what it takes to achieve the American Dream," said Martinez. "But without the freedom to form unions, working people have an uphill battle. Unions give us the chance to create a better future for our communities by ensuring that working people are provided with the healthcare they need and the wages they deserve."
